Reviving Lives

Dawn breaks over the horizon
as light blankets the landscape.
Waves shatters the morning calm,
Birds glide by the spotlight of orange rays.
A nostalgic whiff of the briny sulphur,
Standing on the edge is a fatherly figure.
The humdrum of going to his boat was the parcel of his morning ritual
but today is different as the sea recently robbed him of his livelihood.
The melancholy orange glow moans a forlorn soul who lost his way of life.
The sorrowful sight of debris greets him as he turns and looks inland,
the desolated state of his former home restaurant
has left him with a hole in his heart.
That feeling of emptiness and helplessness hits hard home,
the consolation of being alive is solace, not strong enough.
Others join him, searching for whatever is left of yesterday lives,
the same grim expression is visible on everyone’s face.
The derisory of everyday lives is cried out
by babies and children.
The stench of eeriness reverberates in the air,
abates when the sweet scent of relief placates the crowd
as convoys ferry the much needed help for reviving the town.
