Ferry from Tsawwassen to Salt Spring Island

by Simon Cockle

You said I’d see them,
you promised, then
sealed it with a kiss
of my temple as I
slept, in your lap,
when the ferry slipped
away from Tsawwassen.

Each of us was jet-lagged
that night but the prospect
of Orcas or, better still,
a Grey Whale or two,
kept me on my mettle.

Ahead, the copper disc
of the sun had long since
sunk to the Pacific’s bed;
behind, the clouds above Vancouver
were a drowsy orange.

As the boat forged
across the mirror-blue
of the sea, I walked from bow
to stern examining each surge,
wave for a blunt nose or
the thrill of a fin
in the taut swell of the bay.

But I saw nothing that evening;
only a dumb silence, scored
with the low, subterranean
drum of the engines.

I rejoined you,
just as we threaded the inlet
between Galiano and Mayne.
As the lights of Salt Spring
appeared ahead,
you turned to me and smiled;
a dark, muscular dorsal ridge
broke the surface, steady as an oath,
somewhere in our wake.
