Old World Sand Boa

by Katie Vautour

Raising only his head
from his burrow,

he waits for the sun
to find him.

Rustling
   diagonally
                   over
           the
   sand,

the reptile
   breeds messages—

not modern, in a way,
but similar to calligraphic scripture.

Its skin is printed with
cryptic patterns
   of jagged
                   lines,
diamonds.

Inside his hypnotic eye:
a shivering shrew.

The velvet fork flicks
drifts of a dead
vocabulary.

A lick
insists:

a bite.

Blood snakes
in dark tongues

as exquisite points of incisors
   hook.

The muscular mosaic
curls,
   grips,
rendering the rodent
   into food.

Retreating into its den,
the boa’s black markings

scribble an epitaph
in the dark.
