Glacier d’Argentière

by Mantz Yorke

Wearing a young adult’s self-consciousness
you surprise me, posing for a couple of photographs
by the crystal cavelet where ice has melted
from morainic rock and clay.  Behind you, the glacier

dangles its grubby paw over Argentière, its teeth,
so white from afar, plaqued tobacco-ish brown –
a shabby snow-tiger given beauty only by azure
crevasses almost indigo-deep.  The path we left

to reach the glacier is invisible, as are the pylons
striding up its flank.  Setting over the Aiguilles Rouges,
the sun is liberating night to slither from beneath
rock-coppiced trees and boulders grown huger

since we stumbled down this ratcheted slope.
I lead back upward, breath rasping, legs shaking,
scrabbling for footholds between tumbled rocks
and barging anxiously through the whippy scrub

at the glacier’s edge.
Are we going the right way?
Was it really so far?
  You keep up, unexercised
by either clambering or encroaching dark,
and I recognise a shifting in the relationship

between father and son.  I pause for breath.
A rattling fragments the evening’s stillness –
a geriatric’s shrug as the tiger eases its bones
a little nearer to the valley’s shadowed floor.
