Third Place: Wax Poetry and Art Poetry Contest #14

Dhaka

by Sujash Purna
(Kirksville, Missouri, USA)

Dhaka

by Sujash Purna

A giant forest of people in big brick buildings
with long black hair from women of three eras –
daughters, wives, and in-laws, glancing
above the line with dry and wet
gamcha towels.
The blacked and burned bottomed pots on their
mud stoves to gas stoves, men in a decaying sport,
smoking till the monsoon storm comes
and puts out the light.

A trapped sensation on a sweltering afternoon
with a cup of tea, with a desire to flee
this mecca of tins and huddles of horns.
How come we came to the top to see nothing
but ragged edges of towers and garment factories.
The iron mesh windows around a bird for breed.
It caws, croaks around a group of crows,
and an aluminum bird floating by higher,
higher, louder and gone and gone.
