Return to Aleppo

by Alun Robert

War is over!
According to media.
We can return home,
to our Aleppo.
To our apartment
with balcony of glass,
south facing aspect
on the second floor.

Bombing has ceased.
Gassing has gone.
Guns put away.
Peace has won.

They put us on buses.
They are taking us home.
Reached our boulevard
but there …

snipers still squat.
Land mines explode.
Concrete is crumbling.
Our apartment prone.

Nothing but rubble.
Nowhere to go.
Shops are boarded.
Schools all closed.
No life for an animal,
let alone us humans.
According to media,
war is over!
