Three Musicans
by Bill Lythgoe (Shevington, Wigan, United KIngdom)
|
Three Musicians
Monk’s foot
stomps on floorboards
takes the other two
into a marinating
stew of sound that threatens to break
the bounds of the canvas
painted by Picasso.
Harlequin
scrapes the strings,
his violin sings
and swings the performance
to ecstatic areas even Stradivarius
dared not imagine.
The clarinet spirals
spraying shooting stars across a smoke-stained ceiling,
spreading the news in the middle of the night,
peddling the blues in the cool new morning.
The piano’s chords
don’t tie them down
but keep prodding
keep the music throbbing.
Quavers pack phrases in the language of bebop.
Flattened fifths
clang then stop
turnaround earthbound
alien invaders
and shining in the flame of seething synergy
rising from a brooding night-club corner
Miles smiles.
Trane steams.
Bird lives.
