A Bubble of Rock
Like a hand holding a kite string,
the mainland connects to
a bubble of rock
blowing into the Aegean.
The entrance
unseals the fortress,
whispering nostalgia to the sea.
Ascending,
and stalling on a horizon
spotted with pomegranate blooms bobbing
between layered ceramic roofs.
Pulled by bursts of breeze,
petals exhale a rosy mist from the shore.
Sudden drops
reveal remotely rooted trees
briskly bending toward each other,
winding around paths leading to
twisting tunnels, decorated doors
and stone houses capped with chimney pots
shrinking in the sky.
At the top,
a small church reflects light blurring shape
and in a blink,
joins the sun.
Biography
Born in Toronto, Despina started writing poetry at a very young age.
Those early poems illustrated a desire to experience the world. As a
result, after finishing university in Toronto she moved to Europe for
almost a decade and has been travelling ever since. Despina
continues to tell stories in Toronto through a variety of mediums
including painting. Some of these can be found on Instagram,
@desalexo.
