Finders

       for GD

we are the ones who find
you

we are joggers  walkers  night-time
tokers                lovers loners
cigarette smokers
out for stroll to clear
our heads   steal a puff    raise our heart
rates

we are early
morning        late night
rovers           silence seekers

we slip solitary through sleep-stilled streets
it is we
who find you
crumpled  faces planted  unnaturally in  mother
earth ice or snow    your red flannel
shirts   or ski jackets  scrunched unceremoniously
up your chilled backs    your limbs a tangle
               of impossible angles     not
moving

we are the finders  the suicide
minders   truth-unwinders
dialling
       three numbers
with glove-thick fingers
as we wait for a cop
          car
ambulance

invisible witnesses to a never reported
epidemic of desperadoes set on
STOPPING the pain
that trips the brain
into
one                                 final                          leap
secrets                                                       to keep
that we never sought               trip our guts and our minds
in impossible thought                we strive to rewind time
                                               find
clock’s hands         frozen   `                stopped
in an ending         unbearably                 taut

we are the ones you never considered
                     never delivered
we finders
we keepers
                    now haunted
non-sleepers

we search for the moment this all
could have been altered
take your hand
                                     catch your eye
                       dream the dream of
            acts halted

but now we bring flowers and sweetgrass
and sage
to that place on the ground        hard and flat
unencumbered
know you’ll never age                and our days are now
numbered

the temptation’s made real   we         a hair’s breadth
                                        beside you
in sorrow and loss
and we
never knew
you
