Poetry has a role to play in shaping discourse around the pressing issues of
our time. Poetry can record history, deepen our understanding, and express
withering critique, in ways that other writing and art cannot. Whatever the
human journey, let the record show that poets were there.
Wax Poetry and Art invites all poets to participate in Socially Engaged
Poetry Contest #3. Submissions in English are welcome from everywhere
For the purpose of this contest, we shall consider the widest possible
definition of "socially engaged". (Read the About page at Eleventh
Transmission for some of the topics.)
Please read the guidelines carefully before making your submission.

The work submitted must be wholly original to the person submitting

Copyright remains with the original artist at all times.
Wax Poetry and Art publisher Kirk Ramdath obtains the right to the first
publication of the work, as well as the right to republish the work on our
website and also on our accounts on third party platforms such as email,
Facebook, and other social media, specifically for the purpose of promoting
the work and the artist to more people, and considering the continuously
evolving nature of the Internet. We also obtain the right to republish the
work in our own anthologies, either online or in print, without additional
compensation required. In addition to being published online, Wax Poetry
and Art publisher and editor, Kirk Ramdath, will perform and record a video
reading of all three winning poems, and make the video accessible to
everyone, such as in a YouTube video, although exact format to be
If the winning poets and Wax Poetry and Art come to future agreements
regarding this work that will result in additional compensation beyond the
initial prize, the initial prize shall serve as an advance on future royalties.
Although we strive to apply a light hand when it comes to editing, Wax
Poetry and Art reserves the right to make whatever edits are deemed

All three winning poems will be published individually and featured on the
main page of Wax Poetry and Art, with publication intended for late 2017.
The First Place poem only will be published in print format, in letters sent to
subscribers of Wax Poetry and Art Socially Engaged Poetry Contest. The
poet who wins First Place will receive 1 copy of the issue containing their
work, sent by regular post. Additional copies can be purchased. Details will
be provided to the winner.
The First Place poem only will be entered into both components of the Wax
Poetry and Art World's Best Poem Contest. Winning the World's Best
Poem contest results in an additional cash prize and republication as the
World's Best Poem. Guidelines are being finalized and will be posted later.
We will notify all participants of the results prior to publication and within two
months following the close of the contest.
Judging will be based on two criteria: 1. Quality of writing and editing, and
2. effectiveness of the poem. Both, as determined by the editor. Please edit
