After Charlottesville

after charlottesville
a numb feeling
mix of anger, sadness, resolve
anger because many people
have been speaking of the coming danger, for so long
anger to deflect the sadness
of dozens injured, one murdered
Heather Heyer
and stated again, so we remember:
Heather Heyer
she was on the streets of charlottesville
opposing nazis and other types of white supremacist scum
(because they weren’t all nazis)
she was on the streets of charlottesville
and she was murdered, and dozens were injured
by a person whose hateful beliefs
led them to hateful actions
she was murdered on the street in the united states of america
for standing against fascism. august 12, 2017.
not Germany, 1940
sadness slips swiftly into anger
anger to deflect the fear
the confusion
of an actual worst nightmare happening
torchlit marches for white supremacy
nazi symbols in the streets of the USA
and a president who won’t preside
a president who gives oxygen to the denizens of hate
anger is more useful than sadness and confusion,
more useful than despair,
but all these are luxuries
fear is a luxury
hope is a luxury
resolve is necessary
resolve to stand against hatred and oppression
resolve that is outside of, and impervious to,
the rise and fall of anger, hope, confusion, fear
resolve to use our eyes and ears, our arms and legs, and bodies,
resolve to stand up and be counted
resolve to watch and take notes
resolve to ask yourself if you are prepared to stand between hate
and a victim of hate
resolve to be prepared
in every way, on all fronts
to diminish the ideology of hate
and to amplify the voice of Heather Heyer
to amplify the voice of justice
to amplify the voice of love
