Constitutional Crisis

I do not know
what point in time
mankind perceived
there was a future
and made efforts
to perpetuate the race.
Despite vaunted intelligence
that gave us
the Age of Reason
and much later
the Information Age,
we never developed
the Age of Wisdom.
Instead of evolving
to become caretakers
of our only habitat
the peculiar planet
that sustains our lives,
we remain depredators
devouring as much as we can,
regardless of the harm
to the balance of nature,
destroying carelessly,
purposelessly,
what should sustain the future,
leaving little hope
that good sense will prevail
and we will someday learn
to be custodians
of Mother Earth.

Note: "Diminishing Return" is a poem from
Ignition Point, a poetry
collection that looks at some of the struggles and tensions of our times,
in what is a confusing life for so many of us.
