|"Heaven Forbid" by Ginny Darke - 45 Poems - Eleventh Transmission
One pill makes you larger
and one will make you small,
one is thrown across the counter
and begged to be taken at all.
What time have you got?
To decide? To lose? To extinguish?
The flick of the clipper
sparked within your womb
and all its potential energy
to burn its way through.
not even 24 hours.
You will be made to sit
think ‘good’ and ‘hard’,
do you really want to forfeit?
For then, 24 hours
cannot be enough time.
You’re forced to feel your burgeoning body
as you tick like a time bomb (by your own device)
for 86,400 seconds
to be precise.
Hurried up but told to wait.
Heaven forbid a woman be certain
without some surgery curtain.
