I said nothing, and tried to think nothing.
~ Ishmael in Moby-Dick (Chapter 20)

I said nothing and tried to think nothing
when several boys bullied the new girl in my class,
leaving me alone for a change.

I said nothing and tried to think nothing
when one friend told a racist joke
and another belittled gays and lesbians.

When the president implied that people on food stamps
were all frauds and welfare queens,
I said nothing and tried to think nothing.

I said nothing and tried to think nothing
when my senator opposed legislation to keep guns
from the hands of criminals and people suffering from paranoia,

I said nothing and tried to think nothing
when refugees had their children torn from them
and sent to separate camps.

Ishmael, teach me wisdom
learned from your experience
so henceforth I will have nothing to regret.
