Strange Times

Our president doesn’t believe in exercise!

and even the things I believe in —
public service campaigns advocating
downtown safety strategies — undermine
the core of the city, the jaywalking,
the bicycle dash to catch the bus.
What are we if not hominoids
who evolve for these moments,
all the lunchtime runs in preparation
for the burst you’ll need to cross
against the light, towards traffic?

Message Received

The Vice President, knowing full well the 49ers would kneel during the
anthem,

flew across the country to arrive early to his suite and tweet a selfie
from three years ago, then stomped off in ironic protest as soon as the
last note disappeared

into the ether, back toward the house of the clown presidency where 140-
character ‘FAKE NEWS’ alerts are always an inevitability—social media
and P.R. stunts merely more anesthetizing for an Oval blind to the nation’s
true pain.

Today’s Phenomenon

In the path of totality—
at the moment when moon
blotted out sun—you could
swear as much as you want,
especially if, like the cartoon
President, you didn’t
wear protection as you
craned your neck skyward,
pigeons circling a doubled
Wyoming population and
waiting to scavenge the blind
from what’s left of the exodus.
