1.20.18

With nothing left to hold onto
half a million people came to march—
to pound the pavement for peace,
to crack the concrete for change.
We marched among signs
clever but sadly true,
wore pins, chanted, screamed
carried children on the pedestals of shoulders
who will grow up
to be female presidents,
gay and tattooed politicians,
revolutionaries, free-thinking freedom fighters.

We pushed back,
half a million strong,
in pants and dresses,
in black and white,
in front, in back
and with hope
and more hope.

We closed down the streets,
walked to city hall,
filled up downtown,
made the news,
talked about tomorrow,
learned from the past,
looked to the sky,
raised fists for the earth.

With nothing left to hold on to
and the palm trees swinging drunkenly
across long avenues
and dust settling on worn out stars
with the forgotten names
and the laughing that sounds like crying,
half a million people came to march
half a million protesting heartbeats
half a million troubled sighs.

One, twenty. Eighteen.
With nothing left to hold on to
a million hands held each other.
