"Congrats! You've been blessed with a daughter."
I overhear this conversation between a patient and a doctor
The mother seems overwhelmed
Gladly welcomes the bundle of joy
The father is peeved
As if he has seen a malefactor
He dashes out of the room and murmurs, "Why not a son?"
A strange question, isn't it?
A son
Doesn't matter if he is the first, second or third born
Always considered as a future heir to his father's throne
A son
A ruling dictator since ancient times
Has a history of committing abominable crimes
A son
Held in high regard, apple of everyone's eye
No one dares question his authority, I wonder why!
On the other side
A daughter
Subjected to inhuman atrocities
Marital rapes
Bride burning
Domestic abuse
Child marriage
Female foeticide
Just to name a few
She is neglected,
Her freedom, restricted
Her dreams, trampled
Her smile, confiscated
Her hopes, butchered
Her voice, silenced
Confined within four walls
She is treated as an outcast!
You want to know why?
Because she is a "girl"
She is a burden to this patriarchal world
She has been taught to compromise and sacrifice
Even at the cost of her self-respect
For so-called societal "honor"
If I dig into ancient lines
Where kings are taught to honor their wives and "love" their concubines
And of course, the pratha of "Sati"
Where a widowed woman is forced to immolate herself on the funeral
    pyre of her husband
A special mention to the Greek mythologies
Where abductions and rapes by deities were common stories
What a colossal hypocrisy we live in
Crowds blabbering around with banners of "Women Empowerment"
Yet nothing is done to free them from the clutches of social taint
This is my message to the entire world
She is a curious caterpillar
Nurture her with utmost care
Feed her with profound knowledge
Treasure her like a gemstone
Only then can you witness her metamorphose into a beautiful Butterfly
Flapping her wings, leaving her nest and watch her triumphantly FLY!
