Object Lesson

I felt hope, at first
that the socket-wrenching tears
of virus deaths and aching lacks
were birth pains that our lives
were undergoing on our way to
a better communion, one with another.

But then I remembered us:
a Civil War that created segregation,
a Spanish flu that roared into the selfish Twenties,
a depression scabbed over only by World War.
Catastrophe doesn’t create nobility of soul.
Our better natures sneak in
when there’s nothing else going on.

Ed Ahern resumed writing after forty odd years in foreign intelligence
and international sales. He’s had over two hundred fifty stories and
poems published so far, and six books. Ed works the other side of
writing at Bewildering Stories, where he sits on the review board and
manages a posse of six review editors.
