The Archangel of Damage

the world was once new
peopled with the industrious
hoping themselves into the future
planting their flag in the much more

under impassive stars
they constructed houses
but they were built with dust
and vandalized by inertia

even in sunlight
below a limitless sky
the haze of shortening days
cast substantive shadows

they prayed to the absolute dark
snatched at happiness to fill the gaps
yet nothing changed
though so much happened

well ...  you get the idea
in the muddle
of the familiar
they never saw him coming
