The Wealthy Want the Poor to Die

selfish and fearless
the customers pile into the store
dragging in their children
as they purchase one or two items,
they don't take this threat
as if a virus that has killed so many
is something to sneeze at—
they don't wash their hands or sanitize,
and they don't take the necessary
and we essential workers are expected
to put ourselves in harm's risk
as corporate works remotely—
the wealthy truly want everyone poor to die
working poor or not, they don't care;
they could do better for us but they're throwing us
out to be the sacrificial lambs
whilst lying to us and insisting they care about us.

Linda M. Crate's works have been published in numerous magazines
and anthologies both online and in print. She is the author of six poetry
chapbooks, the latest of which is:
More Than Bone Music (Clare
Songbirds Publishing House, March 2019). She's also the author of the
Phoenix Tears (Czykmate Books, June 2018). Recently she has
published two full-length poetry collections,

Gatekeeper Gaming, February 2020) and
