Social Distance

Stuck, a funny word that makes anxiety
flutter like butterfly wings in my throat
Trapped but, not really,
Leaving is frowned upon but not enforced
outside is like a different world full of
tapped lines in grocery stores to maintain social distance
and intake tents to manage capacity.
People pretending it's the end of the world,
Maybe it is.
I try not to think about it
Only, everywhere I turn there are numbers
Cases, Death Toll, recovered
None of these numbers tell me when it will be over
Worry bubbles for those who are essential, leaving home to take care of
    others loved ones
Paying no mind whose loved one they are
Worry spills over for the vulnerable who the selfish do not give a second
Stuck, Trapped –  do not feel like the right words
Unprecedented? Sure
But really, the right word is,

My name is Samantha Raffles and I live in Connecticut. The
circumstance of the way the world is right now inspired me to write
this poem, as well as my husband who is a nurse on the front lines.
