this period of hibernation
could serve us well
could force self reflection
on those unaccustomed
could teach us all the things
we can do without

terrible for the economy—
the false one, that is...
and its beneficiaries
this rickety scaffolding
that now creaks and quivers
as we contemplate
another way up

but great for the air quality
cleansing leaden blood
and smog sickened lungs
provided you’re still breathing
when it’s over

then again, it might provoke
new and stranger appetites
we might emerge snarling
for still more...more of everything
that cannot satisfy us
now or ever

we might claw our way out
with the madness
of an emaciated grizzly
who slept and dreamed
right through springtime
and now—
summer’s almost gone
