In the Name of Flattening a Wave

Shuttered schools
Leave farmers without
Plates to fill,
So the fresh crops,
Gentle lettuce blossoming in scalloped waves,
Are bulldozed.
All the bounty, cornucopias for the hungry,
Nature’s restless beauty,
Is quietly obstructed, suffocated
By tractors, razor edges.

Life’s fragrant petals stoppered,
Glorious stories are scissored away
Like withered flowers just left to decay.
The virus is a blight
Poisoning the land and its people,
A spring without color or warmth,
The birth of something new
We hadn’t expected.

Lambs breathe their first,
Butterflies ripple across the skies,
Cherry blossoms still bloom,
But no one moves throughout the streets.
Without being in the center, the eye of the storm,
We can’t really see
Save for what the media presents,
As new rules orchestrate life,
Rights are rewritten,
And what is essential is redefined.
In the name of flattening the wave,
What has started
Is a hurricane.
