Americans Believe in the Power of Advertising and It Is
Big Business

by Ally Malinenko

It has a name now,
all this pink
in October
reminding us
that early detection
means we’ll live
long lives
and get to wear
the survivor banner
proud of our downy soft hair
that has just started to grow back
after we’ve been pumped full of chemicals
with our Cut Burn Poison version of a cure
clad in our pink t-shirts
and sweatshirts
happy to just be alive.

They call it pinkwashing
and it shows up everywhere
ribbons on our ballplayers
pink Fried Chicken buckets
pink hairbands
pink earrings
pink soup
pink breath mints
pink candy bars full of additives

But today
I saw an advertisement
for fracking drill bits
that also come in pink
that will be used to cut open this country
and to pump it full of chemicals

the same ones that get into the drinking water
to cause cancer
so that we too
can be cut open
and pumped full of chemicals.

But it’s okay cause they
came up with a catchy slogan
about doing their “bit”
for a cure
and they donated money
to that famous ribbon
to make up for
all that goddamn death.
