Ekphrasticism

Visual art by Don Portelance
Poetry by Candice James
Caught in the eternal flame
Of enlightenment,
They are the hieroglyphs of the past,
The lovers of the present,
The saints of the future.

They have always been
Flowing through time,
A deep resonant symphony
On the shoreline of etenity
Vibrating inside the tidal music
As they kiss at Kristopighi;
And they dance…
Oh how they dance.

Excerpt from "Kiss at Kristopighi".

Nighthawk swoops low from the laneway
where I am paused, deliberating, weighing
out the nows and thens of midlife. The cloud
above my left shoulder a heavy grey barge, slow
in the wind-river sky. April blue has opened
like the door of a tent after a long sleep. The hawk,
muscling an arc to the top of a leafless weeping
willow, folds soft shoulders back and cries
its territorial cry.

Excerpt from "The Sun is Yet for the Sky".
