canada's art magazine
A stranger with an oriental partner looks her in the eye
and they mutually nod in agreement
“it’s a mixed couple thing” she’ll say

Then, she’ll tell me another story
in careful tones
Her family has had a cleaning lady
Should I teach her greetings in my native tongue?

Later, she jokes that in my absence
she came to my rescue,
over some stereotype mentioned at a family reunion dinner.

I force myself to agree
My family thinks I’ve landed this ‘beauty’
of mythic measurements
because pale babies make beautiful children
