Poetry Contest #6 - Winner

Restlessness

by J.J Steinfeld

about to begin a restless walk
you look up and see clouds
clouds ancient and elusive
how absurd, ancient clouds,
but absurdity is the cost
and dreams are the currency
of deities and bereft souls
hidden in the shopping malls
and muscular suburbs
with their secret compartments
you breathe the air, vigorous rite
the aerobics of deceit
of deception
of love turned on itself
this is what memory contorts
this is what history collapses
words are no more real
or realistic
than damaged gravestones
in cemeteries of the minds of the mad
what is the meaning of history
it is not freedom
it is not escape
the memory and the knowledge
what is the meaning of meaning
of words as bullets to the head
bullets to the past
you walk down the street
not a horrifying tormenter in sight
but your walk is only beginning
as it always does
in the past
