Green Commerce

by Gary Beck

Tourists flock to Bryant Park
to buy, buy, buy from tiny stalls
crammed, jammed full with tourist junk,
cheap manufactured goods
they'd never buy elsewhere,
lured to beckoning shoplets
to spend, spend, spend
by those who peddle wares
pleasing most buyers
who enjoy spending money.
On a dank, autumn day
buyers and sellers are satisfied
by transactional exchanges
of minimal value.

Pro Forma Meeting

by Gary Beck

Notables gather at the U.N.
for the annual festivities,
indulgences in New York City.
Presidents, kings, dictators,
with their own agendas,
most having little to do
with furthering world peace,
reminding us
the international body
may have done a better job
than the League of Nations,
but the prevalence of wars
ravaging many countries
should not let us forget
greed and hatred
still rule the world.

Guided Tours

by Gary Beck

The homeless hulk in Bryant Park
and passing tourists cannot tell
if they are different from anyone else,
preconceived notions convincing them
all Americans are peculiar.
