First Place: The Weekly Poetry Contest #6

Light Rain on a Nuclear Playground

Light Rain on a Nuclear Playground

by Maria DePaul

Two bullies shout at each other
From opposing continents

Suddenly the whole world is
On the brink of war

Personal grievances become issues
Of international security

Both men react to outrages real and imagined
Resulting in a thermal nuclear downpour

Blinding light falling from the sky creates
The mass death of innocents

Many who are not so innocent
Support these human hate machines

Leaving the rest of the world
To contain the airborne radioactivity

Survivors must clear the remains
Heal the sick and care for the orphans

Monuments are built to preserve their
Memories of death and destruction

Next time people may step back from
The precipice before a cycle restarts
