Saturday Night Poetry

by Christopher Hivner

Fireworks exploded in the distance
as the cigar lay between my lips,
and I listened to a baby cry from across the street.
The night air was dense,
lying on my skin like bath water.
I can’t see the fireworks I can hear,
the sky holds only clouds
and the first, faint stars.
The baby has been tended to,
all is quiet on the block.
Each draw of the cigar
leaves a sweet flavor on my lips.
I see the lights of a plane
through the gathering clouds
and momentarily wish I was on it
no matter where it is going.
A barrage of firecrackers goes off,
and it feels like war has broken out.
I wonder what the baby’s problem was
and was it mom or dad who was the savior.
All has gone quiet now,
I’m alone with only my thoughts,
wishing for a distraction.

Christopher Hivner writes from a small town in Pennsylvania surrounded by
books and the echoes of music. He has recently been published in Children,
Churches and Daddies, In-Flight Literary Magazine and Anti-Heroin Chic. He
