Fruit Cove, 5 p.m.

by Megan Denese Mealor

I should have been a photographer,
snapping rockslides and bloodshed,
or even the pacific pond where
all the soccer moms go to smoke
bittersweet cigarettes, sometimes
tossing their young a Frisbee or a
football as they prattle and tattle
against the strain of purebreds in
crocheted sweaters. If I were a
photographer, I would catch the
monograph between mergansers,
a seeping inevitability of blue leaves
in the yellow pine air. I would point
my father’s Exakta right at God’s face
and ask Him to stand still for once
in His life while I go about framing
His nucleus. He would never speak
to me again but we were never close
to begin with, nothing in common
other than our weakness for envy.
Cowardly as I  am, I could never
poach the self-possessed prestige
of a Red Red Wine cemetery breeze.
