A History of Warfare
Two poems by Anthony D
A History of Warfare
Forge the broadsword blade,
elevate and rush the escalade,
aim and fire the broadside
and rat-a-tat-tat enfilade.
Ride the atomic wave at Bikini atoll,
brave as the galloping Mongol
lopping heads from a mount
chase the kaboom platoon's rout.
Turn-coats in trench moats
sent down six feet, where they meet,
thrust, twist and retreat
cutting in the dance at the club of blood,
running through the no-man's ‘hood.
Besiege me with pious beseeches
brush the triggers and paint the beaches
with the fertile organs of men under orders.
Oh you strategic finger-pointing creatures
that cannon the anon, on and on,
according to the general plan,
making fine young fodder for iron.
Spinning white noise of snow,
certain patterns of cold.
Felt a flake on my nose,
looked down -
an old drop of grief
once blown from my face,
then thrown back to here,
beautified and brief.

of Calgary. Anthony work-shopped spoken-word poetry with Bob Holman
and is a regular at open mics across the city.
