Poetry by Erin Emily Ann Vance

Leaving
Published September 29, 2015

Leaving

your lips
on my breasts
-frozen
black and blue
like this bed
is a dark room
and your mouth
is a chemist.
teeth and tongue tethered
to our tender awakenings
your photographs
developing on my skin
to remind me of these moments
when you’re gone
and in the morning
in your absence
in the mirror
I find bits of you engraved
in my chest
the best parts of you left
like skin-cell sadness
on my body.
tender
trembling with cookie-cutter desire
for your body to burst
with its stillness
and soft marrow
stretching like eternity
-this separation anxiety
biting harder
like
the more it hurts
the easier it might be
to let go.
I can't scrub you from my skin
your imprints like ancient runes
on my chest
our secret language of breath
and aching.
