The End of Some Things

Poem by Patrick Connors

The End of Some Things

The sun flickers
Through charcoal clouds
Until 4 o’clock

After 4 o’clock
                It tries to warm

The memory of summer –
The memory always better
        Than the reality…

Orange, red-brown, light green
Leaves me feeling warm
Like a bonfire which covers

My neighbourhood
With smouldering ashes

Last remnants of what was
Alive only days earlier

Foresight of what will fall
While the earth lays at rest;

There is beauty
In the change
Of seasons
