Epicentre

by Laura Madeline Wiseman

When you awoke back home you knew your bike
was no longer an ordinary road bicycle ridden
along some highways of corn, but was now hot

as the steam of some geyser billowing
a whiteness that stops vehicles for a mile back
and below it, not road, but something bubbling
a liquid from a fire hole so thermal it warms rivers
that always fill in the late afternoon
with swimmers, holding hands, wading in,

and if you’d never thought of a bicycle
as an active volcano right here
with the tectonic force to make the ground shift

all summer whenever you’d been still,
your bicycle leaning against a picnic table,
or outside the tent while you stood beside,

you had begun to feel the ground tremble.
