Upon the Wind

Upon the wind my lover sighs,
In wheat I stand beneath blue skies.
Her face appears across the grain.
Wide swaths bend down as if in pain,
And in so doing vocalize.

Approaching steam train rattles ties,
Before a crossing whistle cries,
A wailing, lonesome sad refrain
Upon the wind.

And as I wave my fond goodbyes
Within my heart I realize,
I’ll never hear her voice again
And with the passing of the train,
The mem’ry of my lover dies
Upon the wind.
