POETRY PRIZE #2: WINNER

Pendulum

by Aniela Antonovich

Pulses, ebb and flux, to and flow
fiddleheads unfurling
pulsing layers elongate, tighten
undulating down borealis
so too by ground
waves through those boreal homes on wind
Slav’s and servants, Rusny, Ruthenian, Rumanian, Galician
grimy
immigrants lured to cultivate
impoverished, centuries beaten
sustenance-, knowledge-, humanity- starved
lumber famished, drawn into
the impregnable, bouldered shield
Manitoba
Disdainful to the clean cuffed and manicured hand
Anglo
long gone
collapsed beams of their pine pole burdei’s
sod disintegrated, disinterested
ants gnawing through crumbling support of clay chinking
hand harvested
on fingerprints still bear
Oh Kanata, our home of
kinder brands of slavery
connivery, manipulating a postcard from a hinterland of freedom
surely not another kingdom of Siberia
and yet a harsher hinterland
pointing, laughing
for folk costume
worn
hold their nose
and advise
'send them to the savages
for civilizing'
ill intent
not lost in translation
head down
at the plough
pulled by the beasts
with two legs
but so soon ‘enemy aliens’ interned
by false pretense on Hitler’s rise
(to organize and fell a sophisticated government
by way of scythe,
as if the wretched were fed enough to forget
- how annoyed were the Anglo’s by hunger -
to elaborate
thoughts of political coups)
once a serf….
segregated, concentrated, investigated
vow to desecrate the monochrome humiliation
of the capricious Lady christened Canada
by clipping one’s own tongue

So the red and green lap across the fragrant needles
in a flutter
flick
spreading flame of organza veils
a christmas of silence
where the spicy fresh conifers never completely mask
salt and musk and sweat rising, coppery
amidst penniless toil
forcing bodies through labour or failure
through isolation or failure
the silent pith warms
drips a plaster over cracks throughout the trunk
to quiet the sighs of desperation
the gasp of lovers undone
never found
but in archaic whistling through tamarack tops
as a spectral child halts her firewood hauling
pursuing closer inspection
of some green and leaping
spring peeper
or boreal chorus -
distractions so lovely
rarely seen or
admitted to the human eye
Fathers and sons cities away
- winter’s barren will come -
so intoxicated by the humidity
the headiness, the threat of death
the lick of salty skin
stains lips undone
and saunters forever
on the fox’s sly sheen
as the seedling pulses ever forth
phosphorescent
beyond the looming feather shadows
trembling
to the heat of the orb
battling the constant resistance
through the fouler soils
contained by the past
not knowing the chemistry
of its own purpose
is fuelled by hope
