Retribution

by Ace Boggess

you are the hammer cracking a turtle’s shell
dart that pricks a heart-shaped balloon

you are antibodies & white blood cells
Tornado Alley in the season of rain

I am not the laughter but the object of a joke
you are the wife of Midas lying naked in his bed

tanks crossing miles of desolation
you are the enemy of my enemy’s enemy

I am not the circus clown juggling candy
as he marches in the Veterans Day parade

I am the starving homeless who stretches a hand
but can’t reach past your window for the soup
