montreal

by kirk ramdath

one year ago, full speed from halifax
v.i.p. service on via rail train
two hours in montreal
waiting for toronto connection
two hours, not enough
montreal, you banish me
you say,
take your broken heart
back to calgary
don’t look at me with broken eyes
don’t come to me when you are not free
so i leave with but a glimpse of you
too cold in mid-october
you are jealous of that place in my heart
that belongs to someone else
impetuous, you banish me
for the book of woe in my hand
because it means
i do not come to seduce you
dangerous and mad
where less than full is spurned
and throwing fire is a game
until a numbing thursday morning
you realize the bitter winter distance
new love makes us makes us fools again
you forget that you can charm a rat
with a glimpse
so you send your messenger to me
every word she speaks is french poetry
métis beauty
impetuous and dangerous
where less than full is spurned
she is a chef of passion
i am a stove upon which
she cooks desire
we take the train to montreal
from toronto’s union station
she demands the window seat
and falls asleep
waking only to observe
the flight of a falcon
