Lost Culture

by Patricia Pedrus
(Pohnpei, Pohnpei State, Federated States of Micronesia)

The island
once naive
now tainted
by the winds of change

Once native
now giving birth
to a race of a
melting pot

Once a peaceful soul
now disturbed
by a rapid modern world

Once a pristine home of lush vegetation
now crowded with cement buildings
and artificial roads

The island
once their home
our home
my home
your home
has become an uncertain place in the heart

Biography
Patricia Pedrus (Patti): Born and raised on the island of Saipan to Micronesian parents, I was always told a story before bedtime. These stories were not just ordinary ones. They were stories that provided a mystique and an insight into my own learning of the Micronesian ways. It is because of these stories that I have an interest in retelling and writing Micronesian short stories and creating poems.

This poem is included in Poetry World #5, published in the Wax Poetry and Art Library.
