Midnight

by Joseph C. Ogbonna

Midnight comes with the stillness
and quietness of a graveyard.
The tombs are opened, and the ghosts
of the dead are exhumed.

The cricket makes its usual high pitched
chirp. Its chirping sound allays my fears,
when I hear the stalking shadows of the
ungodly hour right behind me.

The chirping cricket gives me a sense
of the company I desire at such an hour.
An hour of the unseen poltergeist
that torments me with insomnia.

It's a long night, but at dawn,
it becomes clear that my mind
was playing tricks on me.
