Sorry

by Michelle Brown

The song lingers in the heart,
Pavarotti's tenor Perdonne mi matched
with the harmonies of Tracy Chapman.

The aria lifts my soul from the mundane
to skate the everywhen, looking for
times when sorry seemed applicable,
hoping for that one apology.

Your leap from the bridge into the night
calling my name, waking me up
has become a mythic narrative,
that filled me with desperation,
a fugitive hope it could all be undone.

Perdonne mi,
Words don't come easily,

All the words I could say drift in
the tinkling silence of night.

As I skate the everwhen and the
Never-never of my life, wishing for what
could have been –

I ignore what is.

Note: Luciano Pavarotti and Tracy Chapman famously performed Chapman's,"Baby Can I Hold You", in Modena, Italy in 2000.
