Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #22
by Michelle Brown
The park bench becomes a refuge in the dappled light. In the heat of dusk, the scent of lemon drifts toward me.
Thoughts scatter each time I reach for them. A cacophony of birds sends those thoughts to a destination, marked no-return.
Starlings dance in a murmuration in the sky, an operatic performance echoing into the ether.
A sensuous woman curves like a mermaid in the thermals, morphing into a long-haired girl,
wandering through a meadow with hands caressing fragrant flowers.
The Brolga girl of the everywhen, emerges in curlew cries, swimming through the pink-blushed clouds in the aquamarine sky.
And the sharpness in my chest loosens. In-between the murmur of delight and the next thought, a lone bird song trills from the there-beyond.
The waves of birds swim in ripples reflected in heart's lake.
The blue heron, soul sister, shakes its feathers and turns its back on the show.
