walking in a liminal space

by Shekina Oh

i’m walking in a lonely, empty place—
darker than night yet brighter than day,
staring at objects i haven’t seen in a decade:

bright red and yellow balloons,
bounce houses, bubble gum machines,
backrooms from a resort i haven’t entered

since 2016; elementary school hallways
now desolate, with murals still standing
from somewhere in the early 2000s,

forgotten memories revived the moment
i reach adulthood, to think i could never
take them back; i should have cherished

the white tiles and rainbow parachutes
before they disappeared, sometime
while growing up, somewhere between

childhood and adulthood; i could only
grab whatever is left—abandoned spaces
and the feeling of temporary disorientation;

has anything really happened?
has this much time already passed?
there’s so much we couldn’t explain

about things of the past,
but that is life; we keep moving and moving
without a thought of what we left behind.
