The Wolf

by Michael Bennett Leroux

I can't remember my nightmares
I wake up in a panic
Heart racing, eyes darting to find the threat
My breathing intense, on guard

She is asleep beside me
I didn't wake her
What was that dream?

Was I being congratulated for something?
Did I win something?

Like sand falling through my fingers
My nightmares are a mockery of my waking life

My brain connects these two worlds
But I can't remember my nightmares
Only a moment
The culmination of success

Eyes open
Heart drops
Reality

I must stay in reality
I can't remember why
but I know I get lost
It would be nice to escape into a dream

Just once, a dream
