Lamentations

by Faith Wanjiru Gathoni Wanjau
(Nairobi, Kenya)

Cast up your strength oh, Samson
And bring to me the sun
I am in need of its aid
I am in need of its wisdom

Cast up your strength oh, Samson
And bring to me the sun
It hangs heavy in the air and burdens my womb
It calls me to its table
But offers neither wing nor ability

I wish to commune at its temple
I wish to be humbled
I wish for my skin to be left ashen –
To be cleansed,
To sing the host its own name.

Oh, Samson
Lend me your ear,
Lend me your aid,
Cast to the sky your strength
And bring to me the sun.
