Axil Poetry Contest #2 – First Place
by Yi Ting Huang (Maegan)
the picture on the wall was,
tilted sideways. the glass shattered
on the bottom left corner, a sharp left,
you said, as i tried driving for the first time.
your face paled in comparison, nothing else mattered.
almond-scented skin. trailing gazes chin, cleft.
esoteric, my prayers lingered on lips, touching
vulgar beauty, wine red sensuous – my
untenable ego like a silver balloon, slipping threads,
singing threats.
pour it down my throat,
syrup.
untenable oaths, rose gold glaze, gaze at burning hues.
vines grew up my legs – shield me from the sun. i am
shards of liquid glass,
tarnished silver hairbrushes,
curled cast-iron chains,
against the flowing stream of frenzied
falling snowflakes – frozen tear. frozen star.
sizzle of sound, dry gasp –
wrenching through,
bereavement tomb,
wax trailed down my lips. heated. hardened.
silently ascetic, unknowing glances knowingly peering,
fraud.
