Parenthood

by Nkoyo Nsa

The dawn of adulthood
With no remorse whatsoever
Birthing a mini-you to the world
A job you must take
To hold and cherish
Till death do you part.

With every step to learn
Each role played
Bringing smiles and sweetness to heart
From their first cry to first word
What a wonder –
Stages with its pattern.

There is nothing greater
A light to your world
A version of you
Made just for you
A blend of your decision to multiply.

Just sitting near the window
Gazing outside in sheer flame of awesome wonder
With the cry of a six-month-old baby
Waking me from a daydream
Yes, I am a parent.

The untold stories linger
Save up, diapers finish
Stay clean, it can be messy
With the little beautiful one staring deep into your soul
What can you offer?
Oh parent,
Lead this little one aright
You are their role model –
A demigod.
