March Equinox

by Kevin Scheepers

Senescent leaves
canvassing the landscape,
setting suns sitting in potholes
like the burnt sands of infinite deserts.
A snarling Siyaya
desperately needing a service
and paint job bruising
through Saturday morning traffic –
migration routes successfully negotiated.
Stubborn pedestrians marching
in thick jackets, blankets, and scarves,
carrying gloves, Sunday's burdens and assorted plastics.
Trading glares and vulgar hand signals between yield signs –
burning rage the lifespan of apoplectic matchsticks.
Exhaust fumes a smoking gun,
a lit cigarette for each lung.
'Tis the season for stealing yellows and reds –
the season for squealing tyres and sirens,
silenced by the winter solstice.
