Artist Statement
The works are inspired by an unusual passage from the Talmud which suggests that there were multiple
worlds prior to our own: "Rabbi Abbahu said: This teaches us that God created worlds and destroyed them,
saying, 'This one pleases me; those did not please me.'" (Bereshit Rabbah 3:7)
This theme of recurring creation, destruction and revision raises an intriguing paradox:
How can a perfect creator make so many imperfect worlds? It also draws obvious comparisons to the very human experience of art-making,
and the obsessive need to hone, polish and perfect, all the while discarding that which fails to satisfy.
Imagining a series of incomplete worlds and civilizations cast aside by their maker, Cancelled Cosmogonies
envisions the work of creation as an extremely self-conscious act perennially suspended in the balance between invention and demolition.
