Winner: Weekly Poems Contest #18
by Ethan McNew
And in the dark, it was a lethargic stutter
Cold water warming the night off the face
Spitting into the sink, hoping to find white teeth but
The dogs need to be let out and the plants need watering
Shuffle in and out of these rooms,
hear the home come to life,
hinges creak, stove drones,
wind blowing against the trees brushing against the roof
Footsteps upstairs and
Not many people really know what happens out here in the dark,
Where the roads are empty and
The great oaks stretch impossibly as you speed by
The weather says rain but I feel something more like a real storm
In my heavy bones
If I leave a light on when I'm gone, would it make a difference
If a prayer were made, would anyone be there to hear it
